I understand entrepreneurs because I am one.
I’ve been a lawyer for more than 30 years. I’ve also spent much of my life building businesses of my own — which turns out to be excellent preparation for trademark law.
Army Attorney. Business Owner. Mother. Trademark Attorney.
Over the years I have started, owned and operated numerous businesses — including three law firms, a real estate investment company, and a women’s divorce coaching business.
I know what it feels like to take an idea and turn it into something real. The excitement of choosing a business name. Developing a brand. Creating a website. Investing money before you know exactly what the return will be. Finding clients, figuring out marketing, and making countless decisions along the way.
I also know what it is like to build a career and businesses while raising a family. I am a mother, and I understand firsthand the additional demands women can face when they are building something of their own while also raising children and caring for their families.
Entrepreneurship can be exciting and rewarding. It also requires time, sacrifice, persistence, and a willingness to keep going when there are competing demands for your attention.
That experience is a big part of why trademark law feels like such a natural fit for me.
When I work with entrepreneurs and business owners, I understand that their trademark isn’t simply a name on an application. There is a business behind it. There may be years of work behind it. There may be money invested in a website, marketing, products, packaging or social media. And often there is a very personal story behind why the business was created in the first place.
I bring that perspective to my work, along with more than three decades of legal experience.
My legal career has taken me in several different directions
-
The ArmyWhere it started
Commissioned, then selected for law school
I began my Army career as a Human Resources Officer and attended the U.S. Army Airborne School. Later, I was selected for the Army’s Funded Legal Education Program, which gave me the opportunity to attend law school while serving on active duty.
-
BerkeleyJuris Doctor
University of California, Berkeley School of Law
I earned my law degree at Berkeley and continued serving as an Army attorney. I was also honored with the American Bar Association’s Young Army Lawyer of the Year Award.
-
20 yearsActive duty
Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel
After 20 years of active-duty service, including 13 years as an Army attorney, I retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. My military legal career reinforced the importance of preparation, discipline, integrity, and attention to detail—qualities I continue to bring to my work with clients today.
-
15+ yearsFamily law
My own practice
I spent more than 15 years practicing family law, including 12 years running my own law firms. Guiding clients through important, often difficult decisions taught me to listen carefully, communicate clearly, and help people navigate legal matters with confidence.
-
CoachingA different seat
A women’s divorce coaching business
Eventually I closed that practice and built a coaching business. Each chapter taught me something different about practicing law, running a business, serving clients, and creating the kind of professional experience I want people to have when they work with me.

Bringing it together
Now I am bringing those experiences together at Dinah Rainey Law, helping business owners protect the brands they’ve built.
I don’t believe the trademark process needs to feel mysterious
I want business owners to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. Something doesn’t have to be confusing simply because it involves the law.
So I explain things clearly, I’m transparent about my fees, I answer questions, and I help clients make informed decisions about protecting what they have built.
I also believe technology should make working with a lawyer easier, not more complicated. I have intentionally built my firm with systems that make the process as seamless and efficient as possible — while still giving clients the personal attention and experienced legal judgment they are hiring me to provide.
At the end of the day, I understand entrepreneurs because I am one. I know how much goes into building a business and creating a brand that represents something you believe in.
